14 years ago, Hirooki Goto won his debut G1 Climax, and 6 years ago, he last made the finals. Tonight, he’s got a chance to make the semi-finals, and face Will Ospreay for a chance to finally be able to say the G in the G1 stands for Goto. Standing in his way is EVIL, and should he defeat the leader of House of Torture – he still needs Zack Sabre Jr to lose his upcoming match. It’s slim, but still possible for Goto.
EVIL Puts A Dark End To Hirooki Goto’s G1 Climax Dreams
EVIL would attack Goto from behind, but would be beaten down and choked with the staff. Dick Togo caught a stray blow, and this one would hit the ring. EVIL tried to regain his footing, before being run down with a shoulder tackle. Lariat in the corner would send EVIL stumbling, before Togo would grab the ankle of Goto as he looked to come off the top rope.
EVIL would take Goto down the hard way, before Togo pulled off a corner pad – and Goto was sent back first into exposed steel. Never one to give up, Goto would fight back – hitting the spinning wheel kick into the corner. When the running bulldog was to be countered, he’d get the Russian Leg Sweep instead.
Togo would yank Goto to the floor, and EVIL would hit the snap suplex onto the ramp. Goto would have his ankles grabbed by Togo, but was able to get back into the ring before the countout loss. He’d get into the ring and right into Darkness Falls, and would kick out before hitting Shoto out of the corner – using the turnbuckle in place of tag partner YOSHI-HASHI.
GTR would be blocked, before EVIL & Togo would look for Magic Killer. Instead, Goto would hit the move with Togo onto EVIL, before hitting GTW. This wouldn’t be enough to get the victory, and EVIL would hit the STO to claim the victory.
Tetsuya Naito Avoids A Long Battle With Zack Sabre Jr.
Whenever Tetsuya Naito & Zack Sabre Jr. meet in a match, they tend to take years off each other’s careers. Following a five star performance in the finals of the New Japan Cup, they meet in a match that decides the fate of the C-Block. Add in that last year, ZSJ took Naito out of the G1 in his first match due to injury – and this one is a personal battle for Naito, and not just him trying to punch his ticket to the main event of Wrestle Kingdom.
Naito started the mindgames early, slowly taking off his entrance gear – and throwing his jacket into the waiting arms of ZSJ. Then his shirt, his belt, and finally his pants. ZSJ would not fall for these tricks, despite historically having a short fuse. He’d beat Naito into the corner, before Naito would slide the outside and away from danger.
Naito would get the tight arm drag in the ring, before the manhattan drop into the pinfall for the two count. They’d trade pinfall attempts, and ZSJ almost ended this one very early. Naito would be nearly caught into the Zack Driver, before getting the Small Package for the victory in 2:58 – making the final four without being sucked into a dangerous battle with ZSJ!
After this result, ZSJ would be enraged, and would tear apart the ringside area. He won’t be able to go into Royal Quest in October with a title shot, and instead might look for the head of Naito on that night.
