In professional wrestling, you often need a more high stakes match to finish up a hard hitting feud. Normal rules will simply not be enough, and one of the most popular matches to end feuds has historically been the Steel Cage match. You trap the men in the ring using a cage, and see who is left standing. We’ve seen some great matches of this type, but there is one trapping. This is something that Matt Hardy among others has notice.
Matt Hardy Feels Escaping Through The Door Of A Steel Cage Should Be Removed From The Matches
On the latest episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Hardy would have a chance to speak on the single flaw of steel cage matches. He’s not a fan of being able to escape through the door. Hardy would be quoted saying the following.
“I’m okay with escaping the cage, but the one thing I would definitely remove is that you can go through the door. I’ve hated that rule since day one. It’s super anticlimactic. The fact that you can walk out the door and step on the floor is boring. If you’re going to do it and say you can escape the cage and win, then you have to go over the top of the cage. So that way, it adds some excitement to the match.”
The most notable cage match in the career of Matt Hardy is likely the one that came at Unforgiven 2005, when he met Edge. This was in the middle of the storyline that stemmed from Hardy’s girlfriend Lita cheating on him with Edge backstage, leading to Hardy being originally fired – but brought back when interest in the angle reached a fever pitch.
In total, Matt Hardy wrestled 13 steel cage matches in his career, last having one in 2017 against Sheamus & Cesaro with Jeff Hardy by his side. Given AEW using steel cage matches sparsely, it’s likely that will be the final cage match of his career as well.
