AEW’s been a hub of social media chatter and drama since CM Punk’s rant at the All Out Media Scrum, and the fallout is continuing as everyone’s looking for more information and what the future may hold for the former world champion.
Any news coming out about AEW and the ongoing relationship/drama with CM Punk remains mostly speculative, but it looks like there’s a good chance Punk may not return to AEW following his injury.
CM Punk Not Expected to Return to AEW
This is a peculiar situation as Punk publicly criticized the wrestling media and then went on a tear about AEW’s EVPs and Hangman Adam Page.
This had been labeled as unprofessional by many as it should’ve been handled behind closed doors, and Tony Kahn didn’t do himself any favors by nodding along and allowing Punk to keep ranting and interrupting him.
AEW’s big on moving forward, and that means we could’ve seen the last of Punk in AEW.
Moving on
In an interview on PWTorch, Wade Keller recapped AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam and he mentioned how CM Punk’s name wasn’t mentioned when Ian Riccaboni talked about the big names that have held the ROH title.
It could be a telling sign as Keller went on to talk about Kahn possibly buying out Punk’s contract. Special thanks to Wrestlingnews.co for the transcript.
“I think this is noteworthy but not surprising [that] he excluded CM Punk’s name as he talked about some of the biggest names who have held the title. That’s a bit of a tell. As I talked with Jason Powell yesterday about – I am not expecting CM Punk to wrestle in AEW again. I’m not saying it’s 100 percent sure thing but everything is pointing in the direction of some sort of buyout of his contract. We’ll learn more eventually about that situation.”
This news isn’t surprising as it was reported that even those close to Punk weren’t happy with how he handled it, and with the backstage fight immediately afterwards it only made things more complicated.
More to come
Everyone involved in the fight has been suspended and AEW has been investigating everything to make an as informed decision as possible.
Like Keller said, there’s a lot more news coming and everything will become clear at some point.
In a way, this feels like a missed opportunity for AEW. Sure, stars have gone public like this before, but it was generally controlled enough backstage where it was turned into a storyline or the person that caused it was immediately fired.
In the beginning, no one knew if Punk’s rant was a work or shoot thanks to Kahn sitting there nodding along, and it would’ve been a perfect time for them to start their own version of the Corporation.
Now, we’ll just have to sit and wait to see how things work out.
