Right now, we’re in a time of transition in NXT once again. One year ago, the Black & Gold era of NXT would come to an end – with NXT 2.0 taking it’s place. Alongside this came some new strategies in how the shows would be presented, and how talent is presented. They moved away from signing indy veterans, and focused on promising young athletes. Now, Shawn Michaels has clarified that this doesn’t mean they’re not reaching out to wrestlers on the indies or in Japan.
Shawn Michaels Confirms That WWE NXT Will Still Actively Recruit Indy & Japanese Wrestlers
While speaking with My San Antonio, the WWE legend and current booker for NXT & the future booker of NXT Europe would have the following to say in regards to how WWE is looking for talent.
“We are still reaching out to other people with experience that have wrestled on the independent scene or been out in Japan or in other companies. That is something NXT will continue to do in the future. Nothing is off the table. We simply want to continue to find people that are just as passionate about the WWE product as we are.”
It’s safe to assume that WWE is simply not looking to hire talent like Eric Young or Roderick Strong, wrestlers who have already had the bulk of their careers. They want the younger names, the likes of Rok-C proving this. Rok-C was the ROH Women’s World Champion prior to signing with NXT and becoming Roxanne Perez.
A steady mix of promising prospects and experienced wrestlers is what WWE needs to run a brand like NXT. Simply throwing exclusively green talent into the ring will not make for good TV, even with some taking quick to the industry like Bron Breakker or Trick Williams. We can expect some WWE veterans to make their way back to NXT as well, with former NXT Tag Team Champion Fandango recently teasing a return to TV.
