In professional wrestling, retirement is rarely a done deal. Recently, we would see the legendary Ric Flair step into the ring with one final match in mind – and now, one of his greatest rivals is following suit. Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat is set to return to the ring later this year in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Ricky Steamboat Set To Wrestle For First Time Since 2010
On November 27th, 2022 – we will see Ricky Steamboat hit the ring alongside FTR for a match against Jay Lethal, Brock Anderson, and a mystery partner. This comes after Steamboat declined to be part of Ric Flairs last match, which ended up being Flair & Andrade vs. Lethal & Jeff Jarrett.
FTR being in his match means that a lot of the heavy lifting will be done by them. Steamboat was last in a ring alongside his son Richie Steamboat, taking on The Dudebusters (Caylen Croft and Trent Barreta) at an FCW event. Prior to this, he had some impressive showings in WWE alongside Chris Jericho – but at 69 years old and having been out of the ring since 2010, fans aren’t expecting much from the legend in this match.
It was a 15 year gap between his retirement in 1994 and in-ring return in 2009 however, so truly anything is possible when it comes down to this match. Steamboat will likely just look to hit some quick armdrags and chops, and leave the bulk of the work to Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler. FTR were in the conversation to be involved with Ric Flair’s final match – making it interesting to see them pop up here instead.
A Big Moment For FTR
FTR have been in a weird spot with AEW lately, seemingly unable to get a proper tag team match. They defended the IWGP Tag Team Championships against Aussie Open in the UK this weekend. Getting to team with a legend might have them ease up on their recent social media whining.
Another match announced for this event is The Briscoes vs. Rock n’ Roll Express, with more set to be announced over the coming month. Do you think Ricky Steamboat will be impressive in this shocking in-ring return? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
