Over the past few weeks, there’s been a looming question in the AEW Women’s division. The debut of Saraya brought a lot of eyes and attention to the division, but no one knew if the former women’s world champion was cleared to compete. Formerly known as Paige in WWE, Saraya was forced into retirement years back due to a neck injury – but following getting physical in a brawl this past Wednesday on AEW Dynamite? It seems that Saraya is ready to go all in once again.
Saraya Is Cleared To Wrestle For First Time Since 2017
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it would be reported that Saraya has been cleared by AEW’s Dr. Michael Samson. This finally gives fans a better idea on what to expect from Saraya, who has not wrestled since 2017. It seemed unlikely that AEW would sign her if she wasn’t able to return to the ring – despite past experience in various other roles in WWE.
The framework for a feud with former AEW Women’s World Champion Britt Baker has already been set up, with the only delay being a recent broken nose suffered by Baker. We can expect promos to build up the tension in the coming weeks, with a possible match at AEW Full Gear incoming. AEW will be looking for as big of a possible stage for the return match of Saraya, making it a perfect fit for one of their four annual PPV events.
Setting her debut up for PPV allows them to turn interest into PPV buys, and will also give Saraya time to work off any ring rust in training sessions. Her big return promo fell flat for many, meaning a big in-ring showing will be needed to recapture the hype of her initial arrival in AEW. Baker doesn’t have the best reputation for being a safe worker, but is someone who can deliver in big situations and is a proven draw for AEW – making her a natural fit.
