Right now, WWE is working on a relaunch of NXT UK, with NXT Europe in the works. This came with mass layoffs, with the bulk of the roster being released in the meantime. Some names were moved to NXT, but the majority are now back on the indies with a chance of being brought back. However, the latest cut has seen the voice of NXT UK – Nigel McGuinness, cut from his contract.
Nigel McGuinness Has Been With WWE Since 2016
Joining WWE originally for the commentary of the NXT UK Championship tournament back in 2016, Nigel has proven himself to be one of the best voices in the company. Previous commentary experience in Ring of Honor made him a natural fit, and Nigel would provide commentary for shows like 205 Live, NXT, and NXT UK since then.
However, with recently overhauls to broadcast teams, Nigel was nowhere to be seen – and we can now confirm reports that Nigel has been released from WWE. It’s possible he will be brought back for NXT Europe, but as it currently stands – Nigel will be a free agent before long.
Potential For In-Ring Return?
This comes at an interesting time, as Tony Khan is currently working on rebuilding Ring of Honor following purchasing the company earlier this year. You can’t talk about the history of ROH without coming across the name of Nigel McGuinness, who is a former ROH World Champion.
While he hasn’t worked a match since 2015 – McGuinness being on the commentary team or acting as the General Manager of ROH would add a lot to the product. Even helping with NJPW English commentary would be massive for both Nigel and NJPW.
It’s also worth noting that while McGuinness hasn’t wrestled in years – it was never due to injuries. He has previously tweeted he can get cleared to wrestle, but is liking staying out of the ring. Right now, Chris Jericho is on a crusade to take down all former ROH World Champions – which could well lead to him going after Nigel, and offering a simple path for Nigel to enter AEW.
