Over the past few years, we’ve seen many major names shine from the UK – but few have had as consistent success as Pete Dunne, known now as Butch of the Brawling Brutes. Butch has been NXT UK Champion, NXT Tag Team Champion – and has a chance to claim the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships this Saturday alongside Ridge Holland as they face The Usos in Saudi Arabia. He’s made it far in WWE – and part of that comes down to impressing Triple H early on.
Butch & Tyler Bate Literally Fought For The Attention Of Triple H
On a recent edition of the Out of Character podcast with Ryan Satin, Butch would detail just how he won over Triple H alongside Tyler Bate as they fought to get noticed. Butch had the following to say.
“I definitely met him very, very briefly. Me and Tyler Bate did a dark match before the show to test the cameras in Glasgow where we had our tryout. Regal picked us up to go and wrestle. I remember he was on his phone or whatever. We’re in there and we were just taking it as a job interview, right? So we were out there just putting our best foot forward, putting on the best match we possibly could. Then I remember halfway through, he puts his phone down and just starts watching. I remember him standing there and watching the whole thing.”
Triple H was not the key talent scout at this time, with William Regal & Matt Bloom there for that purpose. However, getting the attention of the then boss of NXT didn’t hurt the chances of Dunne & Bate becoming stars in WWE.
Bate has yet to reach the WWE main roster, but is a two time and final NXT UK Champion, NXT UK Heritage Cup Champion, NXT UK Tag Team Champion, and NXT Tag Team Champion – while also being the youngest singles champion in WWE history. It’s likely he will get his call up soon, or be a key name in future plans of NXT Europe.
