Joe Biden might think that Elon Musk is a threat to national security. Nevertheless, the president thinks that Tesla’s CEO might have connections with other countries that are ‘worthy of taking a look at’.
At a recent press conference, the president answered numerous questions. One of the most interesting questions addressed Twitter and Elon Musk. When journalists pointed out Elon Musk’s connection to a Saudi Arabian businessman, the president confirmed that he had in mind checking the situation himself.
Is Elon Musk In Trouble? – Joe Biden To Look At Billionaire’s Saudi Arabia Connections
“I think that Elon Musk’s cooperation and/or technical relationships with other countries are worthy of being looked at.” – Joe Biden said. “Whether he is doing anything inappropriate, I’m not suggesting that. I’m suggesting they’re worth being looked at.”
We are speaking about the Saudi Arabian Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. He is one of the wealthiest investors in the Middle East. While he has an obvious relationship with Elon Musk, his company happens to be the second largest investor in Twitter.
Soon after the statement, the Senate took notice of this as well. Elon Musk’s connection with such characters doesn’t go unnoticed. Senator Ron Wyden and Senator Chris Murphy, both Democrats, asked for a ‘thorough vetting’ of Elon Musk’s Twitter deal.
“The Saudi regime has a history of jailing critics, planting spies, and brutally murdering a Washington Post journalist. We must block their access to certain information on Twitter. Account information, messages, and data that they could use to identify political opponents and suppress criticism of the royal family.”
“I’ve long argued that the United States has a national security interest in protecting Americans’ data from murderous foreign governments. This Saudi regime absolutely fits that description.”
The US government’s worry about Elon Musk’s Twitter acquisition is due to the fact that he may force censorship, despite his countering claims. The logic behind this, according to Senate, is that China as the biggest market for his company Tesla might easily lobby him into controlling freedom of speech.
China ‘is to blame’ for more than half of Tesla’s global deliveries last year. This is a huge market for Elon Musk, and as such, he might be willing to do what they say in order not to lose it.
Nevertheless, this won’t be the first time that the government accuses Elon Musk of having a connection to China. A couple of weeks ago he endorsed China on Twitter. Musk addressed the conflict between China and Taiwan and pointed out a solution by giving Beijing ‘some control over Taiwan’. He also doesn’t offer Starlink in China, as they purposely asked him to exclude them from the market.
