After five years away from the ring, Saraya will finally be back come AEW Full Gear. The former Paige of WWE signed a deal with All Elite Wrestling earlier this year, and after some speculation on if she was cleared to return to the ring? Saraya would let the world know she is cleared for a full return on the 11/09 episode of AEW Dynamite. While her return match against former AEW Women’s World Champion Britt Baker will be a simple one on one match – Saraya hopes to explore stipulation matches in the future.
Saraya Wants To Get Away From Just Normal Matches
While speaking on The Sessions podcast with Renee Paquette, Saraya would talk about how she hopes to move away from her WWE roots. One way to do that, is to work matches she never was able to during her time in WWE. Saraya had the following to say about her hopes for her AEW career.
“At first it’s more of a comeback story, an official comeback and being in a different mindset of what I felt like I should have done the first time I came back. There are plenty of women that I want to have matches with eventually. I do want to do the stipulation matches that I didn’t get to do in WWE that the girls get to do now. Also, working more character work, try and build…I’m not going to completely let go of Paige, but a more elevated version of her. There are so many things we can do now. We have such creative freedom,
The Women’s Revolution Brought Stipulation Matches Thanks To Paige
While in recent years, we’ve seen more stipulation matches from the women of WWE – with a recent Last Woman Standing match between Bayley & Bianca Belair a good example, that was not the case during the peak of Paige in WWE. She was one of the wrestlers who finally got WWE to start taking women’s wrestling seriously, a trailblazer. Her matches in NXT alongside the likes of Emma and AJ Lee changed the game – and the next generation of talent benefited greatly from this, while Saraya missed them due to injury.
Since the start, AEW has not shied away from allowing violent matches with their female talents. We’ve seen cage matches, hardcore matches, and even unsanctioned Lights Out matches from the division – with one of the more iconic images from the early years of AEW being a blood soaked Britt Baker. It seems likely Saraya will get chances to show a more violent side in AEW, but we’ll have to wait and see.
