This Friday, Smackdown is starting its World Cup Tournament that coincides with the World Cup of soccer. Many of the games in the soccer world cup are going to be broadcast on national television by Smackdown network Fox.
With the way this is set up, it makes sense for WWE to do incorporate some of the flair of the tournament into their World Cup.
Who Should be in the First Ever Smackdown World Cup Tournament This Friday
WWE announced during this week’s Monday Night Raw that the tournament will be an eight-man tournament and that the winner will get a future Intercontinental title shot against GUNTHER.
The FIFA World Cup is basically country vs country so I think that this could be the case with this tournament and showcase some of the international talent that they have as while also getting someone over.
Of course, they will lose to GUNTHER at the end but there could be multiple storylines that comes out of the tournament that could carry Smackdown’s undercard clear to WrestleMania.
Smackdown stars should of course get preference in this tournament but I think that NXT stars should get a chance in the World Cup also.
As far as who should be the first person in the tournament, all the way from Mexico, Santos Escobar. He is new to Smackdown and is a great in ring performer. This tournament could be a way to establish himself on the brand.
Next, if Escobar is in the tournament, I think it would be fair to put one of Japan’s favorites in with Shinsuke Nakamura.
He recently had a six-man tag that involved Escobar and that feud could continue here.
Next, from somewhere in the UK, Butch. Since Sheamus is out injured and shouldn’t be in the Intercontinental picture until around WrestleMania, Butch would be a high work rate person to put into the tournament.
Another person that should be in the tournament is Jinder Mahal from India? Of course, he has zero chance of winning but he’s in for diversity.
Sami Zayn from Canada should be in the tournament of course. He would be one of the fan favorites to win, but of course won’t.
Next, Madcap Moss should be in the tournament from the United States. He really doesn’t have anything to do but can work in the ring.
Bringing in some NXT talent, we have Apollo Crews from Nigeria. He has experience on the main roster and would have a great match with anyone.
Lastly, Ilja Dragunov from Russia. Him and GUNTHER has a lot of history and I think that he has done almost all he can do in NXT.
What do you all think about this list and who would you put in?
