Over the years, Smackdown has been known as WWE’s B show while Monday Night Raw got all of the shine. There was always a clear difference in perceived talent and star power. Today, the roles are reversed. Even though WWE still puts out the idea that Raw is still the flagship show and it even has more time to put that message over, Smackdown under HHH has been getting better and better.
Smackdown Has the Best Focus of Any Show
The biggest difference between Raw and Smackdown is that the wrestlers on the Smackdown brand have multiple things to aspire to have.
If you look at what they can go after, they have the Undisputed Universal WWE title, the Intercontinental title, the WWE World Tag Team titles, and the Smackdown Women’s title.
I am going to leave the Women’s Tag Team titles off the list because like the WWE World Tag Team titles and the Universal WWE title, these titles are mainly defended on Raw with the champions barely coming to Smackdown.
Each wrestler on the show, whether they are actively going after one of these titles or not, have a goal to one day acquire them at some point.
Each storyline victory brings them closer and closer to making the case that one day they deserve a shot at one of the titles. On Raw, the only goal for everyone is the United States title, even though they may make comments about coming for the Tribal Chief here and there.
With this format, especially for a two hour show, the champions are the clear focus and everything that happens around them directly or indirectly have implications to the titles.
From the biggest feuds like Drew McIntyre versus Karion Kross to the smallest feuds like HitRow versus the Male Models, you can see the victors making a case to why they should have a shot at the title of their choice.
In wrestling, storylines are always better to follow and get invested in when there is a reward to it. Why should we care about two wrestlers having a match if after the feud is done, there is nothing that is gained?
