The day after Christmas, AEW delivered a very good episode of AEW Dark Elevation. There are a lot of things that was on this show that can be looked at as bright spots but it remains to be seen if AEW capitalizes on the great things that they are doing on these shows.
The Good from AEW Dark Elevation
Starting off with something light, and something that I think that Dark and Dark Elevation should do more often, previewing and reviewing weekly televised shows.
These shows are first of all, a show that little used wrestlers and new wrestlers can get introduced to the roster. I think that these shows should also be used to let fans that may not watch or keep up with the main shows to get filled in.
This would help bring in new fans and possibly retain lapsed fans that fell out of the loop.
Julia Hart had a quick squash match. While the match was what it was, I really like the character of Julia Hart. I think a big issue with the women’s division in AEW and many other wrestling promotions is the lack of care.
This isn’t the women being used wrong by the company, but them not having enough personality to make me care about them. There are wrestlers like Mustafa Ali, who can wrestle just as good as anyone, but no one cares and with a lot of the women in AEW, I just don’t care.
Speaking of caring, Ethan Page is great as always. When I watch Dynamite and Rampage, there is always great in ring action, but I don’t care about the wrestlers either way.
This storyline with Ethan Page and Matt Hardy is great. I hope that they continue it for a long time or got something interesting for everyone involved to do once it ends.
I don’t think that there is much to say when you get two wrestlers like Kazarian and Takeshita in the ring. The match was short but showcased both men. I wonder when Takeshita will finally get his chance to show what he can do on weekly television.
The women’s tag team match involving Willow and Ruby as a team and the ROH Women’s title match between Athena and Keira Hogan was pretty good.
I’ve been critical of Willow over my time watching Dark and Elevation. This is the best match that I have seen her in. I think that this could be the start of AEW finally getting a women’s tag team division.
The match between Athena and Hogan was my favorite thing on the show. I didn’t expect much from the match going in, but I was surprised.
I know what Athena brings to a match but I wasn’t sure about Hogan. They both exceeded my expectations. I would love to see this match again a month or two down the line. I would also like to see more Keira Hogan on Dark.
Lastly, a rare match between two debuting AEW wrestlers, when Dralistico took on Blake Christian. This match only lasted around 7 mins, but it was fast paced and action packed.
I think that it was a great showcase for both men. I hope that they don’t start a losing streak for Christian. He is much better than a lot of the wrestlers that you see on these shows.
