When it comes to legends in All Elite Wrestling, it’s hard to deny they’ve done everyone justice. From the likes of Arn Anderson, and Tully Blanchard as managers, to Billy Gunn & Sting as in-ring workers, AEW has consistently shown legends of the industry some well warranted respect. One man who especially gained high praise for his time in AEW is Jake “The Snake” Roberts.
Jake Roberts Felt At Home Back In The Ring
Coming into AEW in 2020, Jake Roberts would instantly take aim at Cody Rhodes – who was complaining about a recent loss to MJF. This was a major shock to fans, and Roberts remembers that night well. While speaking on his “Snake Pit” podcast, Roberts would speak on the reaction he got from the fans.
“Incredible reaction. You can see that all the fans are standing, too. That doesn’t happen very often anymore. When I walked out there, and that rush hit me — oh my God. And then whenever I touched the ring apron, I could just feel it … come right back through me, man. I felt like I was at home again. It had been so long.”
Since his debut, Roberts has followed Lance Archer through his highs and lows in AEW, but missed a lot of potential TV time in 2022 due to health issues. He was forced to rely on an oxygen tank, but has thankfully had his health make a turn for the better. Roberts has expressed interest in working as a commentator for AEW in 2023, which would be an excellent role for someone long considered one of the best speakers in the history of professional wrestling.
Aside from his on-screen roles in AEW, Roberts has been known to be always willing to offer advice to younger talent, passing his decades of experience off the vast array of rising stars in the company. Whenever we get to see Roberts on TV at this point is a gift, as the journey he’s taken to get clean and healthy after years of substance abuse is enough to make him a legend on it’s own.
