Since arriving in AEW, Saraya has been working to elevate the women’s division. Her return match at Full Gear with Britt Baker brought some eyes to the division, and an upcoming tag team match on January 11th, 2023 will further boost attention to the hard working ladies of AEW.
Saraya Feels There Is Space For A Women’s Tag Team Division In AEW
While speaking with Alfred Konuwa of Forbes – Saraya would have the following to say when asked if AEW could support an all-women’s show, in the vein of WWE Evolution or NWA Empower. Saraya would be quoted saying the following.
“I’m always for an all-women’s show, for sure. I feel like there could be a tag division we could get going as well. Like women’s tag team championships. I don’t think we should load wrestling with a ton of championships, but there is space for a women’s tag division, too. There are a lot of women we have backstage that are not on the show, and that could give them an opportunity to be on the show. There is always so much we could do with the women, and people don’t realise how much talent we have backstage.”
Right now, AEW has a few steady female tag teams, notably including Tay Melo & Anna Jay, Penelope Ford & The Bunny, Skye Blue & Madison Rayne, Nyla Rose & Marina Shafir, and Britt Baker & Jamie Hayter. Add in more potential for teams as the roster continues to grow, and it would be hard to see this idea not working. The closest we’ve come to a women’s tag team division in AEW was the Deadly Draw tournament in 2020, won by Diamante & Ivelisse.
Over the past year, AEW has introduced three new championships – with the TBS Championship introduced for the women’s division. The AEW All-Atlantic & World Trios Championships meanwhile were added to men’s championships. AEW risks having too many championships with more expansion, with a Women’s Tag Team Championship potentially the last belt to make sense being added to the mix.
