When Sting made his debut for AEW in 2020 at Winter Is Coming, very few people knew what to expect from The Icon. Previously retired with a neck injury five years prior, it seemed unlikely that Sting would wrestle again. Flash forward to 2022, and Sting is most known for jumping off high objects in tag team matches alongside his protege Darby Allin. Sting’s run has been one of the best legend runs in wrestling history, sticking to just what he can do well – and playing around his limits. He knows it can’t go forever, and has the endgame of his career planned out.
Sting Has No Intentions Of Wrestling Another Singles Match
During a new interview with The Ringer, Sting would say that he’s planned out the rest of his career – and that doesn’t include a singles match.
“Well, I know Darby is going to be a part of it for sure. I won’t have a singles match at this point. Darby will be along with me and I’ll be along with him and we can add more to it as far as I’m concerned. But I have a few people in mind and I really don’t want to say now.”
Many felt Sting would end his career in a match with Darby Allin, which seems unlikely after these comments. There’s other ways to pass the torch, with Allin slowly incorporating spots from Sting in his matches – including the Scorpion Death Drop.
We will be seeing Sting & Darby Allin in a promo segment for AEW Rampage tomorrow evening. This comes ahead of Allin challenging Samoa Joe for the TNT Championship on January 4th. Sting & Allin will be making their Pro Wrestling NOAH debuts in January 2023, as they team with The Great Muta for the final match of the legendary persona of Keiji Muto. Muto is set to retire on February 21st in the Tokyo Dome. Sting & Allin have not been annouced for that show.
Beyond that match, it’s unclear what Sting has planned for 2022. As of the time of writing, his latest AEW match was a victory over Jay Lethal & Jeff Jarrett at Full Gear 2022.
