For weeks now, Kip Sabian has been obsessed with getting another chance to become the AEW All-Atlantic Champion. However, despite Orange Cassidy giving a title shot to literally anyone who asks, Sabian has been having trouble getting a shot. That changes tonight, as Cassidy looks to start 2023 as a fighting champion – going one on one with Sabian, following a title defence last week against faction-mate Trent Beretta led to Sabian putting seeds of doubt in the minds of Best Friends. Danhausen would still be in his corner tonight, while Sabian has his wife Penelope Ford in his corner.
Orange Cassidy Doesn’t Have His Best Friends Cheering Him On Tonight
Danhausen would still be in the corner of Cassidy tonight, while Sabian has his wife Penelope Ford in his corner. Cassidy quickly went for the Orange Punch as this match began, with Sabian avoiding before being taken down with a roll – but Cassidy wasn’t looking for the pin. He would instead punch Sabian in the face, showing how deep that Sabian has gotten in the head.
Sabian would slip to the floor and give us a rendition of Zombie by The Cranberries, before The Bunny would skip down the ring to join Ford. Danhausen would get angry, but didn’t throw any curses at this point. In the ring, Cassidy was stomped into the corner before being thrown across the ring. Cassidy would be able to move to the apron – but wouldn’t hit the springboard, with Sabian taking him down to the floor.
The Bunny & Ford would mock the Best Friends hug with Sabian, before Danhausen would look for a curse… and have his finger bit. Sabian would keep biting as Cassidy would hit the suicide dive to the floor, before looking for the Tornado DDT in the ring. Sabian was able to block only to take the Stundog Millionaire – sending him to the floor.
Cassidy would look to dive to the floor with a DDT, but Sabian showed his power by blocking and setting up the Dragon Screw Neckbreaker using the apron for a higher angle. Back in the ring, Sabian would apply a claw hold to the neck – driving Cassidy into the mat for a one count. The neck of Cassidy was starting to cause the champion some issues, especially after having to kick out of a Fisherman Suplex.
Ground Octopus Hold would be applied by Sabian in the middle of the ring, with Cassidy able to counter into a pinfall for a two count. Sabian would be able to keep his ground with an elbow to the top of the head. Cassidy was whipped hard into the turnbuckle, before the big cannonball senton from Sabian followed.
Sabian would go for a second senton, with Cassidy able to dodge this time. Cassidy would set up Sabian on the top rope, originally looking for a superplex but almost getting the Avalanche Beach Break. Sabian would block this, but the original plan of the Superplex would follow – dropping Sabian hard.
The Bunny would try to grab the boot of Cassidy, but this led to her being kicked out from the ringside area. The Butcher & The Blade would follow, with Danhausen trying to fight these two heavy hitters off in a losing effort. They’d grab chairs and sit at ringside as Cassidy & Sabian traded blows in the middle of the ring. Sabian would mock Cassidy by pretending to put hands in pockets before a headbutt and two stiff knee strikes.
The PK would be followed by a Fisherman Buster, getting a two count. On the floor, Butcher & Blade looked for Drag The Lake on the steel chairs – with Best Friends hitting the ringside to make the save. In the ring, Sabian got a two count off a Dragon Screw Neckbreaker before his version of the Orange Punch. That just pissed Cassidy off, who would hit the Tornado DDT, the PK and Beach Break for the two count.
Sabian would be stomped into the corner, and Cassidy threw the ref down out of anger. Sabian would look for a roll up but Cassidy would kick out and hit two Orange Punches for the victory to remain AEW All-Atlantic Champion.
