The first episode of AEW Dark this year was much better than the one from last week. While it had its fair share of bad, it was mostly good. Here are all of the best parts of this edition of AEW Dark.
The Good from AEW Dark
Starting off this week, I wanted to point out two of the promos that were cut. The first one with Ryan Nemeth was a goofy promo that really got his character over. He seemed comfortable on the mic and it showed.
The next one was a promo that last week I criticized two of the people involved for. The Arn and Brock Anderson with Brian Pillman Jr promo was pretty good. I think that the tone used was spot on. I look forward to seeing their new tag team.
The Ryan Nemeth squash match was solid. It did what it supposed to do and that is always a plus.
Next, the Brian Pillman loss to Christopher Daniels was solid. I was tempted to put it into the bad side because it went on entirely too long. The same match could’ve been had four or five less minutes.
The slow pace of the match, which I usually don’t mind, really hurt the match because the crowd seemed like they didn’t care about the match one bit.
Daniels isn’t the same wrestler that he used to be but that didn’t matter in this match.
The Rohit Raju match was pretty good, and I want to give a shout out to Richard Adonis for the part that he played in this match being as entertaining as it was.
While it wasn’t long, it was competitive. The first time that I saw Raju in the ring, I thought that he was generic but he has improved since that time. I really like the promo that he cut backstage after the match.
He seems like he really embraces talking in front of the camera and I think that he needs to leverage that to separate himself from the rest of the roster. Most wrestlers in AEW don’t sound natural in promos.
Next, I enjoyed the Jora Johl match. It was short, sweet and to the point. I think that Jarett Diaz played his part but it was all about Jora. He really looked good in this match. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of him.
I always tend to enjoy Ari Daivari. I think that his recent absence was really missed. He really pulls the Trustbusters together as a group.
I like Leon Ruffin as a babyface. I think that the crowd really want to get behind him but he loses so much that it makes it hard for them to do that.
The Varsity Athletes are great. I hope that they get some more time on Dynamite and Rampage sometime soon.
The Kiera Hogan squash lasted less than a minute which is fine. I really wanted to see what Kaci Lennox could do though.
Sonny Kiss and Slim J had a pretty good match. I really like that they are giving Sonny more time in the ring as opposed to last year when she would technically be in matches but she wouldn’t get any time in the ring.
I think that Top Flight and The Workhorsemen are great. I really think that even though Top Flight are great babyfaces, I think that they have the potential to be great cocky heels.
