We’re just two days away from Wrestle Kingdom 17, the biggest show that New Japan Pro Wrestling will run all year. On the lead up to this show, there was two matches worthy of being the main event – with Will Ospreay vs. Kenny Omega for the IWGP United States Championship and Jay White vs. Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. At the end of the day, White vs. Okada was the bigger match, especially given that Wrestle Kingdom 17 is a tribute event to Antonio Inoki, and Okada really embodying the spirit of Inoki.
Jay White Claims Anything He Does Will Always Be More Important Than What Will Ospreay Is Doing
However, having spoken as much trash as he’s going to about Okada – and wants to save some material for while he’s in the ring on January 4th, White has turned some of his attention to Will Ospreay. White had the following to say about Ospreay when asked about the current IWGP United States Champion and how Ospreay defends the belt more than White defends his.
“This World title is worth a lot more than his so of course this gets defended less often. Also, that’s all up to Will. If he wants to put his neck out there constantly and put himself at risk, that’s up to him. That’s why I’m a great smart champion because I’m smart with where I defend. I want to lead this place. Will- I have no idea what Will wants to do, but it’s never going to be as significant or important as what I do,”
NJPW has kept Ospreay & White away from each other since 2020, as both men truly stepped up their games to become some of the best all around wrestlers in the world. Their last singles meeting was in the 2020 G1 Climax, just before Ospreay turned heel and formed the United Empire. With Ospreay becoming even more popular since 2020, there’s a chance of a big Ospreay vs. White feud in 2023, potentially one of the biggest and freshest feuds NJPW has going into the new year.
