AEW went from having the most promising year out of any company at the start of 2022 to their year being remembered for controversy and backstage issues. The best thing to do in these situations is give fans a reason to forget about that stuff. These are three storylines that could do this in 2023.
Jamie Hayter vs Jade Cargill
This is a storyline that I can see happening sometime around the summer. What I would prefer to happen is a title unification match so that we can start getting less titles in AEW but that is a longshot.
While, in ring, there are better matches that AEW Women’s champion, Jamie Hayter could have, I think that Jade Cargill has the most potential star power in the women’s division by a long shot.
Throughout wrestling history, the main event or the champion hasn’t always been the best person in the ring. It is usually the biggest star and there is no way that Jade don’t have the potential to not only be that, but to put the division on another level the same way that Sasha, Charlotte, and Becky did in WWE.
I think that a Hayter vs Cargill storyline, especially if it is done right (I know that is a big if, given how the division has been booked so far), could take the division to another level and make it one of the main reasons people tune in to the program.
Claudio vs Samoa Joe
There is no way that Claudio went from beating one of the top five wrestlers in the world at the biggest wrestling event in the world, was in the middle of a massive push, was on television every week in front of millions of people, to being ROH champion in a company that don’t have weekly television.
There is no way that this is working out the way that he planned for it to happen. I think that he should quickly drop the ROH World title so that he can stay on AEW television.
I know that he could work both, but he shouldn’t have to. He should be able to work in the best position possible, which is on Wednesday and Friday nights. While we are at it, keep Joe away from ROH also.
Put these two guys into a storyline every week and let them work their magic. At the highest, we might have a feud that will go down in AEW as one of the best ever. At its worst, we will just have a random collection of great matches.
Swerve Strickland vs Adam Cole
Swerve needs to be on television every week. There is no question about that. He is one of the most interesting wrestlers that they have. He is also one of the most charismatic that they have and he is a natural on the mic.
Likewise, Adam Cole is also great on the mic and great in the ring. Even when he was in NXT, he has always had a hard time making people truly hate him and boo him.
The natural progression of this is to make that person into a babyface and that’s what they should do here.
I am not sure when Adam Cole is going to get cleared from his injury, but I think that I will be soon. Even if it is a few more months, it will give Swerve a chance to finish up what he has going on with Keith Lee in the meantime.
