Back in 2019, the departure of Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks from New Japan Pro Wrestling had fans curious on what was coming for the trio. It seemed possible they would make their way to WWE – only to turn around and form All Elite Wrestling alongside Tony Khan & Cody Rhodes. Now, in 2023 – the original contract of Kenny Omega is coming to an end, but when will he be a free agent?
Kenny Omega Contract Was Originally Set To End In January
Originally, the contract of Kenny Omega was set to end in January 2023. He signed a four year deal in 2019, but his contract allowed All Elite Wrestling to extend his contract to cover injury time. Given the time Omega took off following Full Gear 2021 – this would put his contract at an end date around November 2023 instead.
This is fairly standard practice for professional wrestling, allowing companies to maximise the time that they get from their contracted talent. Omega has been frequently featured on TV since making his return to the ring ahead of All Out 2022, focusing on the AEW World Trios Championships – which will be defended at AEW Revolution against House of Black.
Will Omega Leave AEW For WWE?
While it feels obvious that Omega will sign a new contract with All Elite Wrestling come November, Cody Rhodes leaving to return to WWE and ending up in the main event of WrestleMania 39 has put doubt into the minds of everyone. Rhodes being shot to the top of the company after his time in AEW shows that WWE is willing to not only bring in major AEW names, but get behind them and use the rising popularity of AEW to make them into stars. It changed the game of professional wrestling, and makes all contract situations in AEW significantly more interesting to follow.
Omega has never worked in WWE, and if he wants a chance to work as a top star in the company – November could be his final chance to get into WWE in the prime of his career. Another four or five year long contract would take Omega to the end of his full time career in the ring, making this one of the most important choices of his career. Being able to work in New Japan Pro Wrestling in AEW might well be the perk that plays major influence in the choice of Omega.
