Since All Elite Wrestling got its start in 2019, they’ve really settled into a ‘quality over quantity’ approach to their big events, only running four major PPV events over the course of the calendar year. This has allowed AEW to run PPV level cards occasionally on shows like AEW Dynamite. However, they proved in 2022 that there is room to move away from this formula, with the success of AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door and several Ring of Honor branded PPV’s. AEW’s CEO Tony Khan knows there is room to grow with the right backing.
Tony Khan Knows AEW Has The Capacity To Grow PPV Schedule
While speaking on The Jon Chuckery Show – Tony Khan would be asked if he is tempted to move to a monthly PPV model like WWE has used since 1995. Khan would have the following to say – noting that it would take an AEW streaming platform to get to this point.
“There are different ways to deliver shows now in the streaming economy, but I think in this current setup, we have a great calendar. If the delivery method changed or streaming enters the conversation for AEW because an AEW streaming platform is something I get asked about every day; I think for us right now, the way we’re doing pay-per-view makes sense, but if the right offer came along on streaming to expand the calendar, that’s something we have the capacity to do. I would only want to do it if we can make sure that we keep Revolution, Double or Nothing, Forbidden Door, All Out, and Full Gear as premium, top-end events like they are right now.”
The potential of an AEW streaming platform is one that has been brought up many times by both Tony Khan & Tony Schiavone – and is something fans are hoping to see soon. AEW has built up a fantastic backlog of matches, and there is no simple way to go back and rewatch favourites – especially as AEW plus is replaced in many countries around the world.
Forbidden Door Being Mentioned Alongside The Core Four AEW PPV’s All But Confirms 2023 Event
One other thing to note here is that Forbidden Door was mentioned alongside the mainline AEW PPV events – all but confirming a second iteration of the AEW x NJPW Supershow for 2023. The first event was viewed as both a test and a risk by AEW fans, as Khan chose to run both Forbidden Door & All Out in the same market of Chicago – with both ending up being major successes.
With Kenny Omega back in the mix and holding the IWGP United States Championship after defeating Will Ospreay at Wrestle Kingdom 17 – a second Forbidden Door event feels all but essential for 2023. The option of running the show in Japan has also come up, which would mark the first live event from AEW in all of Asia. AEW are set to make their UK debut later this year with a show in London, their first time moving outside of North America.
