Vanilla Ice Reveals He Turned Down Madonna’s Marriage Proposal in the Early 90s
For those too young to remember, Madonna was involved with Vanilla Ice starting in late 1990. During an appearance on the Just Jenny with Jenny Hutt podcast, he went into their relationship briefly and how it ended in 1992.
One major point of this period of his life was a marriage proposal from Madonna who had been riding a massive wave of popularity since the 1980s as one of the MTV era of music’s megastars. Vanilla Ice—who has detailed his career and management by SBK Records at the time—was also sailing on a wave of popularity but he was aiming for a crash.
The nature of their relationship involved them wearing disguises to avoid the press. It was a fast-paced affair that seemed to slowdown with the proposal. He felt it was off that she proposed as they weren’t together all that long and he was still in his early 20s and Madonna was in her early 30s.
What really ended things was the release of the Sex picture book. It featured many celebrities and socialites of the late 80s and early 90s. Scenes with Vanilla Ice and Madonna were included and that didn’t sit well with him as he had been building an image at the time.
The book was panned and impacted Madonna’s Erotica album negatively. As for Vanilla Ice, it dropped when he was really at his peak and things started to decline as far as public perception. He maintained his advertisers and continued to tour but broke things off with Madonna by hanging up whenever she called.
