The NXT women’s division is going through a rebuilding stage of sorts. While they have many questions and many holes, there has never been as much talent on the brand as there is now, even during the highest point of the division. Here is my outlook on what the future of the NXT women’s division has in store.
The Top of the NXT Women’s Division
If there is a conversation about the top of any division, you have to start with the champ. Roxanne Perez is that person and her title reign is just getting started.
The biggest issue that I can see her facing don’t come in the form of any challenger but by the lack of challengers. While there is more talent than ever, NXT has failed to make any of that talent into top tier stars capable of challenging for the title.
It seems like the formula for many of the challengers in wrestling nowadays is a random person attacks the champion or challenges them with no build up or reason, then the challenger spends the next few weeks picking up wins, then they have a match.
Or, for the method that is used more often, lets have an “open challenge” for the title or a match with a bunch of people and the winner will be the person that gets pushed for a few weeks then get the title shot.
Unless NXT can pull some magic out of their hat, I think that Roxanne Perez’s first NXT Women’s title reign will be remembered for nothing more than a few matches against challengers that didn’t really feel like they belonged.
The Few Challengers
While the biggest issue that the division will face is the fact they lack creditable challengers for the title, I think that there are a few names that could challenge. The issue with those names is that it seems like they are all busy with something else.
The two biggest names are the two women that she defeated at Vengeance Day. Jacy Jayne and Gigi Dolin are the two biggest names that the women’s division has. It seemed like they were on their way to the main roster until NXT broke them up.
Now, it seems like they will be in a program with each other and it might not end until at the earliest, WrestleMania weekend.
The other challenger that they have is Zoey Stark. She is one of the best women in the ring that they have and someone that I think should probably be champion right now.
While I like Roxanne, I think that with such a talented but inexperienced roster, they need someone that can carry some of the women in the ring. While I think that Perez looks great in the ring, I don’t think that she has the ability to make others look good yet.
Apart from that, Stark is currently in a storyline with Sol Ruca and kind of Nikkita Lyons. I don’t see her being available to challenge for the title anytime soon.
The Rest of the Women
This is a large section. There is a lot of raw talent, a lot of potential stars, and not alot of heat.
This is something that I think they will have to solve slowly over time. I think that they have big plans for some of the women like Sol Ruca, Tiffany Straton, Sarray, and Lyra Valkyria.
Out of all of these women, I think that Sarray and Lyra are the most ready to challenge for the titles in ring wise, but from a popularity side, there is still a lot of work to do.
The best thing that I think that NXT can do in this situation is to take their time building these women up. Roxanne does not need to be in the ring, on television, or defending the title every week for her to be relevant.
NXT has five different titles. I think that they can showcase four of those titles for a while until they can properly build up some challengers for Roxanne. In the meantime, WWE has done a good job sending their main roster talent back to NXT to help out from time to time.
In this case, I think that it would be great to see someone that WWE wouldn’t mind Roxanne defeating challenge like Tamina, Sonya Deville, or Xia Li.
