So, we know that Brock Lesnar turned down a match against Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 39. The alternative is a showdown against Omos while Bray will face Lashley. Now, Lesnar-Omos is an odd pick for WM at this point as Omos is still a work-in-progress in-ring and as a character and he wasn’t even a top pick for Brock Lesnar as the pool was primarily Gunther, Stone Cold, and Bray Wyatt.
It’s been mentioned that Vince McMahon had a role to play in this one. While it’s likely he suggested it or pushed for it as Triple H still values the old man’s input, there are still those who believe that Vince is calling the shots on this bout.
Is Omos a Better Pick to Face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 39 Than Bray Wyatt?
The thing about it is Lesnar was able to avoid a match with Bray at WM 32. At that time there was a straight path for the two to face each other but the Beast Incarnate ended up facing Dean Ambrose. Seven years later and once again, there was a straight path for these two to square off but Lashley defeated Lesnar via DQ at Elimination Chamber.
It was expected that Lesnar would win the bout against Lashley and rumor is that the finish was changed following Bray announcing he’d face the winner. So, everything was set up for what could’ve been a decent spectacle whether it was the Firefly Funhouse or a standard match. The build-up and mic work is something that Bray can handle easily while featuring some physicality with Lesnar along the way.
It wouldn’t have been reinventing the wheel creatively but this seemed like an obvious pick. According to fans and observers of Bray Wyatt’s return to WWE have pointed out that his momentum has been burning out rapidly. He’s now gotten a reputation as a “momentum killer” and the belief is that Lesnar saw this, saw what the next chapter for him was, and opted to take the loss to Lashley.
Hell, the match between Lesnar and Lashley could’ve been more but even ended in a DQ which didn’t hurt either man’s momentum. Lashley actually got a boost but was tossed to Bray Wyatt in the process. Honestly, if avoiding a Bray match was about maintaining momentum, that makes sense.
Facing Omos at WrestleMania mano a mano is another thing. Omos is going to benefit from the match win, lose, or draw and Brock Lesnar isn’t going to be hurt at all or get a boost from facing the youngster. It’s a safe match momentum-wise but is it a match that should be on WrestleMania?
Over the years, the show has gotten better at presenting a WM card worth sitting through from start to finish. Sure, there might be some meh matches here and there but rarely to pre-Ruthless Aggression levels where fans watched the entire show in part because of the amount paid for the PPV—for the most part.
While this match is unlikely to get people percolating, it’s a spectacle match that you always have on a WM card that might be good or should’ve been left off the card entirely. It’s pretty random but a WM match featuring a giant will typically lean towards spectacle and those are usually viewed differently from matches we see often.
