Even though it’s almost eight months after Ric Flair’s Last Match, some fans aren’t letting the main event go. It was not the best main event nor was it even a decent one in practice. Even Flair himself said that it wasn’t good at all but Jeff Jarrett has a different, valid take on it.
Jeff Jarrett Says That Fans Had Ridiculous Expectations of Ric Flair Heading Into ‘Last Match’
The AEW star told My World co-host/Ric Flair’s Last Match promoter/Flair’s son-in-law Conrad Thompson that the expectations varied. Jarrett—who teamed with Jay Lethal against Ric Flair and Andrade El Idolo—noted that people expected then-73-year-old Flair to do all the classic stuff he’s been doing for years now.
Of course, that just wasn’t going to happen. That should’ve been evident when Flair came out with the shirt on that this was going the main classic moment we were getting was the Nature Boy bleeding profusely—which he delivered on.
Jarrett also noted that Flair wasn’t close to dying and was actually calling everything in the match despite being dehydrated and drinking the night before. He maintains that Flair “still tore the house down” despite the consensus about the match and Flair’s part in it.
Personally, I believe that while we could only expect so much even with Flair having three other wrestlers in the ring who could deliver on the bumping and more athletic/physical stuff, there was only so much you could expect from the star of the show.
As the star of the show even if you can’t physically give 100-percent physically, you should put in the maximum effort possible and Ric Flair did that–even if it was hindered by pre-show nonsense. With that said, it’s entirely fair to say “If this is the best you can do, I am not impressed” especially if you paid for event for the match itself.
Then again, that’s a you issue because the card as a whole was pretty good and folks tuned in to see Flair off. I doubt many of us expected Ric Flair to bust out an unexpected 5-star banger on his way of the door.
