2023 might end up becoming one of the most important years in the history of All Elite Wrestling when all is said and done.
They have set the stage for one of the biggest events in professional wrestling with All In from Wembley Stadium in August, which could well bring in over 60,000 fans.
To bring in that amount of fans, AEW are expected to pull out their biggest matches and storylines – which makes CM Punk a key figure.
AEW Wants To Bring CM Punk Back, Doesn’t Want More Backstage Issues
Recently, we would see some reports of AEW preparing to bring CM Punk back onto TV. Last seen at All Out 2022, Punk was injured in the main event where he became a two time AEW World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Jon Moxley. He suffered a tricep injury during the match.
However, the real story that night came with a big brawl between CM Punk & The Elite – which was in no way planned. It led to all four men being suspended from AEW and stripped of their championships. Since then, it’s been an uneasy topic for everyone involved.
Recently, Dax Harwood of FTR would pitch a trios match involving Punk & The Elite for All In. This is something Punk was reportedly open to, but that The Elite was less receptive to.
In order to prevent more backstage fights – Tony Khan could be looking to split the roster between two weekly shows.
AEW Collision Is Set To Replace AEW Rampage
Earlier this year, All Elite Wrestling would file a trademark for AEW Collision – which is planned to be a new weekly two hour show for the promotion.
It’s expected to air on Saturday nights, a currently untapped market for weekly professional wrestling – which mainly risks going against WWE PPV events, which generally only come once a month.
It’s very likely that Collision will replace AEW Rampage, which currently airs at 10PM EST on Friday nights. The weak timeslot and taped nature of Rampage has made it the lesser of AEW’s weekly shows.
Supporting this is the fact that AEW recently cut a Rampage event from Friday, July 14, and added a “TV event” on Saturday, July 8 in it’s place.
A roster split is possible given the depth of the AEW roster in 2023, and having CM Punk at the top of their Saturday show while The Elite stay on Wednesday is a potential solution to potential issues.
CM Punk is expected to return to AEW TV on the June 21 edition of AEW Dynamite in Chicago – coming right before Forbidden Door II.
