There’s a rumor going around that stems from some Dave Meltzer said about the WWE preparing Brock Lesnar as a top contender for the World Heavyweight Championship.
The catch, according to Meltzer, is that Cody Rhodes will win the World Heavyweight Championship, meaning whomever wins between AJ Styles and Seth Rollins are merely sacrificial placeholders if this is correct.
Brock Lesnar is a Top Contender for Cody Rhodes’ Future World Heavyweight Championship Reign
The further lynchpin in this theory depends on Lesnar winning at Night of Champions to even their record at one win each, and given Cody has a broken arm it should be a lock.
Which means it’ll be a heroic match on Cody’s part that he could possibly pull out or come close to doing it. The loss won’t hurt him since he’s badly injured, and will only show how strong his heart is and will endear him to fans even more.
With their records even, Cody could then focus his attention on winning the World Heavyweight Championship from Rollins or Styles, and it’d set them up for their third and final match in their trilogy for the title.
There’s just one problem with this logic: it defeats the purpose of having a new title.
Leave Lesnar out of the title picture
This idea sounds like Vince McMahon booking. It doesn’t make any sense, it’ll undermine the legitimacy of the title since no one wants to see Lesnar in the title picture, and it undermines Styles and Rollins’ potential runs.
Much like Lesnar starting his feud with Cody, it doesn’t make any sense for him to be in the title mix, especially when he’s been losing more than not as of late. Another issue is the inconsistent storytelling with Cody
While the WWE has tried to keep Lesnar looking strong by having him lose to various interference methods, they’ve painted themselves into a corner as he’s supposed to be a heel and Cody is looking more like the cowardly heel.
Cody literally fluked into a win against Lesnar and ran like a scalded cat afterwards, hence why he’s so incensed.
And Cody coming out and proclaiming it was him slaying the Beast and other heroic nonsense would’ve gotten him booed by any other fanbase, but in the WWE he’s too firmly cemented as one of the company’s top faces.
If the WWE wants the new World Heavyweight Championship to be considered a legitimate title and on par with the ones Roman Reigns has, they need the initial champion to have a year long reign full of exciting storytelling and matches.
