In 2020, no one knew what to expect from WWE. The world entered a global pandemic with COVID-19 – and suddenly, WrestleMania 37 was set to take place behind closed doors with no fans.
This was before WWE introduced the WWE Thunderdome, meaning empty stands for all matches. However, one match took a different approach – that being John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt.
Instead of being a traditional match, Cena would instead enter the Firefly Funhouse – and have to face his personal demons as he was manipulated by Wyatt. In doing so, he faced his most dangerous opponent to date – himself.
Firefly Funhouse Match Was John Cena’s Brainchild
This match was a critically acclaimed one, with many praising its creative nature and it being a welcome change of pace from empty arena matches.
One person who enjoyed the match was Cena himself, who would admit that it was his brainchild, and something that really challenged him. Speaking with Josh Horowitz for 92NY, Cena would be quoted saying the following about this match.
“I did a unique piece of programming called the Firefly Funhouse match. Which was a giant exercise in vulnerability. I worked my a** off on that thing, and I thank everyone who was involved, because no one does it alone, but it was kind of my brainchild and my creation.”
There is no other match in Cena’s career quite like the Firefly Funhouse match. Many fans agree it would have been the perfect retirement match for Cena, who has since focused on his career in Hollywood. Cena has returned to the ring since WrestleMania 37, notably facing Roman Reigns & Austin Theory in major PPV matches.
He’s admitted getting into the ring is getting harder as he spends time away – and is unable to go as hard as he once did as a result. Cena is expected to remain with WWE on a part time basis due to his passion for the industry, but his time as a full time wrestler has been done for many years now.
