2023 is set to be one of the most important years in WWE history. The day after WrestleMania 39 concluded, it was announced that WWE was purchased by the parent company of the UFC – Endeavour.
The merger is set to take place later this year, and could well change the very foundations of WWE. One condition of the deal is that Vince McMahon will maintain a position of power within the company, after his 2022 retirement.
Vince remains a divisive name in professional wrestling, but there is a place for anyone in WWE to go – with Rocky Romero holding the door to New Japan Pro Wrestling open.
Rocky Romero Reminds WWE Talent That The Door To NJPW Is Open
While speaking on the Comedy Store Wrestling podcast, Rocky Romero would speak of the investment NJPW made with Mercedes Mone, and how the door is open for anyone upset with developments within WWE. Romero was quoted saying the following.
“New Japan is in a weird spot because the pandemic hurt them. They’re a live event business more than anything. The pandemic happened, touring went out the window. It was important for the company to take care of their own, so nobody got fired or released. Everyone was taken care of and survived. Now, they’re just starting to get back on their feet. Mercedes was a big investment, obviously, going forward and testing the waters of where they were in the States and worldwide when you take a big talent on like that. Now, we’re starting to feel comfortable again. Long story is, basically, if because Vince is back and there are people who are unhappy in WWE, there very well could be a possibility of somebody coming over, being fed up with it and just walking away. New Japan’s door will be open if that happens, for sure.”
Romero is a key figure in NJPW, setting up working relationships with companies like Impact Wrestling & All Elite Wrestling. He’s even worked with WWE, crucial in allowing Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson to stick around in NJPW until Wrestle Kingdom 17.
