One of the best matches of WrestleMania 39 was a three way battle over the WWE Intercontinental Championship. In it, reigning champion GUNTHER fought off both Sheamus & Drew McIntyre in a hard hitting war to remain champion.
It got critical acclaim from all sides, being judged as one of the best matches in WrestleMania history. However, following it – former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre would vanish from WWE TV. He’s yet to appear since – and there’s more than one reason why.
Drew McIntyre Is Not Happy With His Current Role Within WWE
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer would have an update on McIntyre. McIntyre has not been seen on WWE TV following WrestleMania 39 firstly due to taking time off to deal with an injury. However, it has now morphed into a situation also containing a key differences in creative ideas between McIntyre & WWE.
McIntyre is likely upset with not really being treated as a main event name in the company, given his hard work as WWE Champion during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. His WrestleMania moment was hardly what he expected, and when WWE had a chance to recreate that moment at Clash At The Castle – he was defeated by Roman Reigns in disappointing fashion.
Despite the differences, McIntyre is internally listed as one of the Top 3 babyface names on Monday Night RAW following the 2023 draft. The only names above him are Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins, and his name is above the likes of Riddle & Shinsuke Nakamura.
Should he return, he will find a decent role on Monday Night RAW as a result – but he could be looking for more than just decent at this stage of his career.
Right now, McIntyre is under WWE contract until 2024. Should a deal not be found before then, he will become a free agent – and likely to find a home in All Elite Wrestling.
