Paul Wight—better known as The Big Show—has been behind the mic for most of his stay in AEW. However, there have been questions as to when the former World Champion will get back in the ring.
AEW Commentator Paul Wight Discusses When He Can Return to the Ring
Wight signed with AEW in 2021 after roughly 24 years with WWE. Despite having won a ton of gold and accolades in WWE—including four World titles—it would be “creative frustrations” that saw Paul Wight call it on his WWE career. Like fellow destructive WWE super heavyweight and World Champion Mark Henry, Wight was picked up by AEW and assigned to commentary.
Now, while Wight could handle himself on the mic, he was never actually given time behind the booth and as an interviewer. He’s a giant, why would a 7-foot bruiser be behind the commentary booth? When you want to get sympathy on a commentator because the heel is being a bully, who’s going to bully a giant?
Well, AEW did it anyway and Wight’s voice has become a part of the company’s broadcasts. While he hasn’t really gotten back into the ring, he has gotten physical several times in his AEW run and had four matches—mostly on Dark Elevation.
When asked about a return to the ring on the Deuce and Mo podcast, Wight said it was all about “getting the muscle stronger and having a bit more fun “ and that he’s got time left on his AEW contract. So, the 51-year-old has time to get back in ring shape and wrestlers are seeing longer careers in part because of breaks from the ring.
As to when we can see the former Big Show in the ring, he didn’t give an exact time frame but said that he’s aiming to “sooner rather than later.” When he does return, AEW will have a landscape that should be very familiar as someone who has been in multiple brand splits.
Are you anticipating a Paul Wight return to the ring? Who do you see as his first feud back and what brand do you see him on? Will he be a floater or will he be on the upcoming Saturday program?
