Last week on AEW Dynamite, Adam Cole would play MJF like a fiddle. After hearing the AEW World Champion express how bored he was with a lack of competition, Cole would prove that he could easily match MJF on the microphone.
Cole would goad MJF into agreeing to have a match with him, and tonight – he gets the chance to see what the hype is all about. This is not for the championship however, with MJF not giving up a title match on TV that easily. If Cole is able to get the victory however, he will earn a future title shot – making this an incredibly important match in the career of Cole.
MJF Has Everything To Lose, And Adam Cole Has Everything To Gain
Cole would remain calm as the match began, knowing what is on the line here tonight. With a thirty minute time limit there is time to spare, though we know MJF can last up to sixty minutes. MJF would hit a shoulder tackle and mock Adam Cole’s signature taunt, before a slick Fargo Strut. Cole would almost nail a superkick, but MJF ducked and fled the ring.
MJF would head off into the hostile crowd, throwing popcorn and flipping the hats off fans. Cole would wait in the ring, knowing a count out would get him a title shot at the end of the day. MJF would accuse Cole of pulling his hair when they locked up in the ring, before driving Cole into the corner and raking his eyes.
A hard whip into the corner would follow, and MJF would find some time to taunt. MJF took a bit too much time, and Cole was able to recover – and stomped MJF into the corner before some downward punches to the face. Cole would toss MJF to the floor with a back body drop, before trying for a baseball slide and being caught in the ring skirt.
MJF would slam the hand of Cole off the steel steps before raking the back. Cole would have his hand stomped into the steps, further softening the arm for the Fujiwara Armbar. A top wrist lock in the ring would keep the pressure on, before Cole broke free and was yanked to the mat by his hair. MJF would hit a Step Over Armbreaker, before going right back to the Top Wrist Lock.
Cole Nails A Picture Perfect Superkick
Cole would again fight free and went for a lariat, with MJF ducking and sending Cole to the mat shoulder first. Pumphandle Driver from MJF would follow, getting a near fall on Cole in the process. MJF would hit the signature pose of Shawn Micheals, before signalling for the Sweet Chin Music – but took a superkick from Cole instead.
Blood would start pouring from the mouth of MJF, leaving the champion absolutely stunned. Cole would keep the pressure on, hitting a pump kick to the jaw before an Enziguri and the Backstabber for a two count. Panama Sunrise would be blocked, with MJF placing Cole on the apron and hitting an armbreaker over the top rope.
MJF would look for The Heatseeker Piledriver, but Cole was able to counter and tried for The Boom. MJF ducked and hit a shoulder breaker, but Cole was able to quickly counter with a knee drop brainbuster for another near fall. A tight Ushigoroshi would see the knee of Cole buckle, but MJF was dazed – giving time to recover.
Cole would move to the apron, trying for a German Suplex but being counter. MJF tried for a Tombstone – but Cole clapped his heels on the ears of the champion before trying for Panama Sunrise. Cole was taken off the top rope, and hit with a Tombstone on the apron. Both men were dazed, but wouldn’t be counted out.
MJF Risks It All On A Diving Elbow To The Floor
Back in the ring, MJF would stomp on the left arm – returning to the early injury. Bending the arm of Cole around the bottom rope, MJF was setting up the finish – with his Salt of The Earth armbar becoming more dangerous by the second. MJF would yell at Cole, calling him a nobody – and was met by a weak forearm.
After spitting on his challenger, MJF was met in the middle of the ring with some stiff chops and heavy forearm smashes.
A rake to the eyes would give MJF an opening, but he’d run face first into a boot. Cole faked MJF out with a superkick but hit the knee before two superkicks to the face.
The Boom was set – but MJF nailed a stiff lariat. Cole tried for a crossface, but MJF countered into Salt of The Earth. MJF would be unable to maintain the hold, and Cole got an anklelock – only to end up in a version of the LeBell Lock.
Cole would reach for the ropes and had his other arm captured, but used his foot for the rope break. Heatseeker would not be avoided on the second attempt, with Cole’s head spiked off the apron but only getting a two count as we hit the twenty minute mark, meaning ten minutes before the time limit draw.
MJF would clear off the timekeepers table, before dragging Cole to said table. Cole would be prone as MJF hit the top rope and crashed down with a picture perfect elbow drop. MJF would even nail the left elbow of Cole on impact, meaning this couldn’t have gone better for the champion.
Saved By The Bell
MJF would lay in the ring as the referee started the ten count, with Cole hitting his hands and knees by eight – and lunging into the ring just before ten.
The champion was shocked, and was lured into a superkick on the apron before a Straight Jacket German Suplex landed. Panama Sunrise was set, and MJF would collapse away from Cole – leaving the danger zone.
Cole would be lured across the ring and kicked in the mid-section before diving onto the arm. MJF would argue with the referee, before being rolled up – and shoving Cole right into the referee.
He’d try to use the World Championship in an Eddie Guerrero style ruse, but the referee was more dazed than MJF intended. Cole would hold the belt, and nailed MJF between the eyes before hitting The Boom for an insanely close fall.
Another Boom was set, but MJF collapsed to the mat before Cole would connect. MJF would be set for a German Suplex, but would grab the referee to ensure they missed a low blow. Putting the Dynamite Diamond Ring on, MJF was ready to end this – but the referee knew his gameplan.
Cole hit a superkick and the Panama Sunrise, before The Boom followed up. Before the three count – MJF would be saved by the bell, as we hit a thirty minute time limit. Cole grabbed a microphone and asked for five more minutes. MJF said no, choosing to fight another day.
