2023 is proving to be an incredibly important year in the history of All Elite Wrestling. They are set for their biggest show to date with All In, already selling 70,000 tickets for Wembley Stadium.
Their first major console video game AEW Fight Forever is set to release on June 29th after years of development. They are even going to launch a new weekly show, with AEW Collision set to debut on June 17th. However, one thing that got lost in the shuffle was their house shows – called AEW House Rules, which might be doomed to a short lifespan.
AEW House Rules Events Have Been Lacking Top Stars, Drawing Low Attendance
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter would publish the following about the latest AEW House Rules events – noting they could be the final events of that kind until further notice.
‘AEW ran what may be its last house shows for a long time over the weekend. With them adding Collision, I don’t see house shows likely and there aren’t any more left on the schedule. Plus, as the word gets out that the top stars aren’t on these shows, unlike WWE which features top stars on its house shows, it would get harder to draw. The 6/2 show which went against Smackdown and Rampage on TV, in Tupelo, MS, drew just 1,576. The 6/3 show in Huntsville, AL, drew 2,237.’
Helping Young Talent Get Ring Time Was Sole Benefit Of House Rules Events
The best thing that the House Rules events did was get some younger AEW names extra ring time. However, low drawing shows reflect poorly on the overall AEW brand – and could be viewed as an unnecessary expense as a result. AEW’s focus on televised events since 2019 has ensured fans around the world get to see each match, making the House Rules format an oddity.
The future of these events will likely be determined later this year. As Meltzer noted, any previously announced shows have been completed – and unless a new tour is announced, it’s likely that AEW will simply focus on televised content going forward.
Between AEW Dynamite, Rampage, Collision and Ring of Honor – there is enough time for talent to have matches, that extra shows simply aren’t as needed.
