Former TNA, NWA, and WWE superstar Mr. Kennedy left WWE after a very misfortune-riddled career. Just look at his four-year run in the company, he’d be on a clear shot up the roster at rapid speeds before getting injured or some external issue.
A prime example of this was his loss of the 2007 Money in the Bank briefcase. He’d received an injury and WWE just dealt with him being injured in December 2005. Mr. Kennedy would win MITB at WWE WrestleMania 23—back when the match was a spectacle/car crash match featured on the show.
So, he gets injured a little over a month later and the briefcase goes to Edge after it was relayed that Kennedy would be out of action for up to seven months. It turned out to be a misdiagnosis and his return time was shortened to just two months.
Former WWE U.S Champion Mr. Kennedy Names Stone Cold Steve Austin as Dream Return Opponent
In either injury case Mr. Kennedy would’ve returned to WWE with more than enough time to build him back up heading into WrestleMania XXIV—when he said he would cash in his Money in the Bank title shot. In case, this injury would kind of define the routine of his WWE run.
However, with the recent years seeing more in-ring returns to the company with Carlito being the most recent, superstars such as Gene Snitsky have entertained questions about returning to WWE.
While speaking with the UnSKripted podcast, Mr. Kennedy named Stone Cold Steve Austin as his dream match in a return to WWE.
“My absolute dream opponent of all time hands down would be Steve Austin. I was so happy when Kevin Owens got to do that a few years ago. What an awesome thing. That would be my dream opponent.” (h/t: Wrestling Inc)
That’s a pretty damn big return match knowing his history in WWE. That would mean someone in creative with an astronomical amount of pull and a love for Mr. Kennedy’s character and skills would need to get that one in the ring. Hell, they would need a story leading into it and the nod from Austin.
Sure, an Austin endorsement for the match could get it done but even then, WWE could look at the present roster and find a better opponent who could really make the most of that bout. Austin matches are a a very rare commodity.

Of course, it’s a dream match for a reason. In the interview, Mr. Kennedy also expressed interest in facing Seth Rollins and praised AJ Styles as the “best wrestler in the world.” His last promotion of note was Billy Corgan’s NWA where he appeared in 2019. Kennedy has taken a reduced schedule in recent years and wrestles as Mr. Anderson. He has expressed an interest in wrestling more in 2023.
It’s possible we could see him return as he was last training Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson.
