One of the most solid mid-card wrestlers over the past decade is Shawn Spears. From WWE to AEW, Spears has proven he can fit any needed role on TV.
He’s been an underdog babyface that gets crowds behind him, and a sadistic heel looking to crack people over the head with a steel chair. With a recent return on TV that went nowhere – Spears might start swinging a steel chair again once again.
Shawn Spears Says He Will Be Swinging Chairs Again Very Soon
During an interview with Vibe 105, Spears was asked about the origin of his chairman persona – a chairshot to the head of ex AEW star Cody Rhodes. Spears said the following about this moment, and if we can expect to see the chairman return.
“First thing I thought when I hit him was ‘bullseye,’ that’s the first thing I thought. In terms of the backstage, I don’t pay attention to a lot of stuff online, especially since I’ve had my son, I just don’t have the time. Back then, I knew there was a lot of buzz and controversy. All that stuff is above my pay grade, I don’t care. My job is to go out and perform. I had a goal and I accomplished it.
You guys are going to say what you’re going to say and watch what you’re going to watch. My job is to go out, perform, and let the chips fall where they may, and then go out and do it again the next week. It was a big moment. The Chairman is not gone, I will say that. The Chairman is just hibernating. He will be back, you will see him again. I will be swinging chairs again very soon.”
The AEW roster has grown majorly since 2019 when Spears signed on, and while some feel he’s been slightly outpaced by younger names.
There is a story to be told in that, and Spears getting paranoid about his spot in the company and looking to injure rising stars could help to heat him up. It would also allow him to give rising stars like Lee Moriarty, Darius Martin, or even Wardlow some solid matches in the process.
