Over the past few years, there has been major strides made in the women’s division of WWE. We would see the introduction of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships – and the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships would quickly follow.
However in the recent WWE draft, the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships would be taken from the NXT brand, as champions Alba Fyre & Isla Dawn would be drafted to Smackdown Live. Now with two sets of belts on the roster – WWE is considering a unification match.
WWE Doesn’t Need Two Sets Of Women’s Tag Team Championships
A unification match between these sets of tag team champions is likely to be set up in the coming months. There are no current plans to place the NXT belts back onto the brand, nor are there enough tag teams across RAW & Smackdown to support two sets of belts.
Right now, the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships are held by Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler, who recently claimed the vacant championships. The previous champions were Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez. Morgan suffered an injury, ending their reign early.
With Rousey now in the tag team division, they are likely to set up Rousey & Baszler as a dominant team – and perhaps the fastest way to establish that is to have them defeat another set of champions.
A match between these two teams would be an easy storyline to build, and a fitting match for a PPV event in the future. With Dawn & Fyre both hailing from Scotland – doing the match at Money In The Bank is an option, as a UK based crowd would easily get behind the NXT Tag Team Champions.
In addition to these belts likely being unified, we are set to see a rebranding of the RAW & Smackdown Women’s Championships, starting tonight with RAW Women’s Champion Asuka on Smackdown Live. No names have been revealed yet for the new belts.
It’s likely one belt will be the WWE Women’s World Championship, and the other be the WWE Universal Women’s Championship – falling in line with the top titles in the men’s division.
