When teams were being drawn of the Blind Draw Tag Team Tournament, no one expected the AEW World Champion to have his name drawn.
However, after his time limit draw with Adam Cole – MJF would have to accept him as a tag team partner. Tonight, they make their tag team debut in their first round match of the tournament.
There is no shortage of skill from both men, and they have the same giant ego that would only grow with an AEW World Tag Team Championship reign – but is that enough to get them on the same page? They will face a set of tag team specialists with Daddy Magic & The Butcher – who would be in for an upset victory.
MJF & Adam Cole Make Their Tag Team Debut
MJF & Cole couldn’t agree who would start the match, but Menard & Butcher would run them down from behind. Cole would be initially isolated, before MJF got the tag. MJF would apply an Abdominal Stretch in the corner and ask Cole for some extra leverage, wanting Cole to help him cheat – and goading him into it.
Menard would finally break free and hit a hip toss, taking MJF to his corner. Butcher hit some crossface blows to the face, and MJF was in trouble as the powerhouse mercenary would put all his weight into his strikes. Combined with Menard’s tag team instincts – the ring would be cut in half.
MJF would try for a kick to the midsection on Butcher, but was blocked and chopped down. Butcher would apply the Abdominal Stretch, getting some revenge on behalf of his tag team partner.
Menard would add some extra tension like Cole did, but this allowed MJF to score a low blow on Butcher… but Menard tagged in and applied the Abdominal Stretch.
MJF would beg for some help from Cole, sending the referees attention away from him as he hit another low blow. Butcher would prevent a tag, but Menard would lose control after a poke to the eye. Cole would gain control of the match, hitting a lariat before the Panama Sunrise was avoided.
Menard would take a superkick, and MJF would ask for a Double Clothesline as Cole just won the match using The Boom. A win is a win, and while we saw no team work from them – their skills as individuals could carry them to the finals with ease.
Happy Birthday To Adam Cole (Bay Bay)
After the bell, MJF would grab the microphone and would ask if he’s got any fans in the building. He’d build to a big Adam Cole cheer, before asking Cole to hang out at the gym again this weekend. They can work on their chemistry, and that Double Clothesline that would have won the match had they hit it.
Cole would agree, before MJF had one more thing to say – Happy Birthday! It was Cole’s birthday, and MJF had a whole party planned with modest cake and balloons and hats, which would be brought to the ring. MJF would put the hat on, before putting one on the head of a rather grumpy Cole.
Cole would have a tooter put in his mouth, before MJF would show his vocal abilities as he led the crowd in Happy Birthday. Cole appreciates what MJF did, but he’s done more than enough. MJF would ask Cole to make a wish on the cake before they finished up, and plotted to shove his face into the cake.
Cole was one step ahead, and threw MJF into the cake face first. MJF would admit that he got got, and that the cake is pretty great. Cole would thank MJF for doing all this for his birthday, and called MJF his friend before heading to the back.
