AEW’s Paul Wight: “I Wouldn’t Say I’ve Still Got It. I’ve Got Enough.”

When it was announced that All Elite Wrestling had signed WWE mainstay The Big Show, few knew how to react. Now going by Paul Wight, this is a signing that hasn’t panned out due to Wight requiring a knee surgery. This has led some to ask if he still has the ability to go in the ring, and Wight has an answer to that.

Paul Wight Has Enough To Work In AEW, Is Smarter As A Wrestler Now

While speaking on talkSPORT breakfast – Paul Wight would be asked if he still has it. Wight had the following response, saying he’s got enough for his current schedule after a long career.

“Have I still got it? I wouldn’t say I’ve still got it. I’ve got enough. At this stage of the game for me, where I’m at in my career, I’m not trying to win championships or carry companies. I did over 20 years at five days a week all over the world. I think now, if I do one or two days a week, it’s just about enough for me.”

When asked what fans should expect when he returns to the ring – Wight responded that he’s going to be smarter about how he performs.

“The only difference is now, I’m a little bit more judicious in my choices. I’m pretty sure you won’t see my big ass going to the top rope anymore because I have learned through my years that I have no business being up there. So I keep my feet on the ground. Now I’m my 20s, you couldn’t tell me that. But now I’m like, ‘Yeah, keep your big ass on the mat and entertain the fans and have fun.’

That’s what it is at this stage of the game for me is having fun, trying to pass some of that knowledge down to some of the younger generations and inspiring confidence and passion in them. That’s one thing you want to do. A lot of people say they love the business, but if you truly move anything, you give back, and you want the business to be better. Better shape, better trained talent, better thinking talent, than when you came in.”

What Role Can Wight Fill In 2023?

When it comes to value of Wight in 2023, that is something that fans have debated since his signing. His limited ring time has done little to help this – but with Wight set to get back on the road, we can expect him to be showing up soon. While he’s far out of his prime, Wight is still a veteran of the ring and a known multi-time World Champion.

He’s still one of the biggest wrestlers in the world in terms of scale – only giving up size to Satnam Singh on the AEW roster.

AEW tends to use larger wrestlers as the muscle for heels, as we are currently seeing with the TNT Champion Luchasaurus – who protects Christian Cage. This is a possible role for Wight, with the Don Callis Family being a perfect spot for him.

With Don Callis to do the talking, and Konosuke Takeshita as the workhorse – having a giant veteran with a deadly right hand walking around would make for a solid faction.

Don Callis has been trying to bring Chris Jericho into the mix, who is a former tag team partner of Wight from their time together in WWE.

A wrestling fan practically since birth, who has been hooked since he got his first toy wrestling ring for Christmas as a child. Since getting access to the internet, he's watched more wrestling than he could ever remember from all around the world. It's hard to keep track of what happens in the wild world of professional wrestling, but he always tries to stay up to date. Note: No relation to Tully Blanchard of Four Horsemen fame (probably).
