So, what’s up with Carlito and his return to WWE? It was speculated for a while that he had been scooped up by the company following his involvement with the Bad Bunny-Damian Priest bout at Backlash in all three men’s native of Puerto Rico.
Is Carlito Still Bound for WWE or Have Those Plans Been Axed?
On Rene Dupree’s Café De Rene podcast, Jack Kilby, the Executive Vice President of Great North Wrestling—owned by podcaster and wrestler Hannibal—said that Carlito had re-signed with the WWE and gave the GNW a heads up that he would be leaving.
Looking at GNW’s schedule, the company made a comeback for its 15th anniversary in May 2023 after being inactive since August 2021. Apparently, Carlito was to be penciled in for a show in the fall but informed the GNW office of his WWE opportunity.
After applauding Carlito’s performance and condition ad Backlash, Kilby said that the heat was on for indie promoters to secure the former U.S Champion for their shows.
“…it was kind of a race for the indies to sign Carlito for an appearance before what a lot considered was inevitable would happen and that would be re-signing with WWE. And unfortunately by the time we locked him down for September the 15th. We went through the process of arranging his appearance. He was going to be in a high-profile match.”
It appears that Kilby and the GNW took the news in stride as they knew that WWE was going to scoop Carlito up. The Caribbean superstar offered his services in the future if he was available and expressed that he’d be in violation of his contract if he wrestled for GNW. Kill by said that Carlito was professional in give the company a heads-up.
This brings us to this week where Carlito was scheduled to debut on July 7, for SmackDown at Madison Square Garden—a big edition. However, he reportedly missed his flight from Pittsburgh. He was in the area on business related to WWE’s medical program.
There doesn’t appear to be a strike against Carlito on missing the show since the LWO wasn’t heavily featured and there were other events that would’ve dulled his return quite a bit.
