World Wrestling Council announced on Saturday that NWA World Champion, Nick Aldis, will defend his title in Puerto Rico on 3/14. The “Ten Pounds of Gold” champion will wrestle the former WWE Intercontinental, the United States and Tag Team Champion, Carlito.
The NWA World Championship is not a strange sight on the island. In 2018, Nick Aldis went head-to-head against Billy Gunn. But, that match was for Championship Wrestling Association (CWA).
Carlito vs. Nick Aldis: Ten Pounds of Gold Arrive in Puerto Rico
Aldis will defend the grand championship in the Caribbean’s oldest promotion, WWC. The company, which is owned by Carlito’s father, Carlos Colon, has been the home for numerous NWA World Championships defenses. Carlos Colon himself challenge for the championship many times in the 1980s when WWC was Capitol Sports Promotion.
As we have reported lately, WWC is making a huge push for 2020. The company was failing in the past two years. But, late 2019, management turn towards the former WWE Tag Team Champions, The Colons.
Epico and Primo Colon started to modernized the company. The olds logo was edited out, with a newer one showing a fresher product. Moreover, exciting wrestlers started to comeback. El Mesias, Ricky Banderas, returned. Also, 2x WWC Universal Champion and The Crash favorite, Mecha Wolf 450, made his way back.
In 2020, the Colon went all-in for the supremacy of wrestling on the island. With a former WWL (now La Liga Wrestling) changing its business model, WWC became the sole promotion in being a presence in various parts of the island.
Some moves have shown to be the big impact of WWC in 2020. First, the promising IWA-WWC invasion. Savio Vega and his failing IWA PR will join forces with WWC to conquer yet-again the wrestling landscape in Puerto Rico. With La Liga Wrestling doing smaller shows, an IWA PR invasion in WWC will gather thousands of fans.
Another eye-catching move was bringing the NWA World Championship. WWC is mixing modern style with the classic influences that still dominate WWC. Carlito is the better talented of the Colons, but his motivation is non-existent. With Nick Aldis bringing his NWA title to Puerto Rico, Carlito will finally have a reason to appear in a WWC show.
Another element for the success of this move will be the national pride that an NWA title bout will bring to WWC. In the past, when WWC was the most popular promotion in the island, an NWA title bout would gather thousands of fans in baseball stadiums. With Carlito being one of the most popular Puerto Rican wrestlers of all-time, plus a title defense for a historic title as the NWA World Championship, WWC has guaranteed a huge crowd for their March show on 3/14 in Bayamón.
