For the past 437 days – Gunther has brought a level of importance back to the WWE Intercontinental Championship. His hard hitting style has brought the belt back to it’s roots as the ‘workhorse’ championship of WWE, and matches against Sheamus & Drew McIntyre were instant classics as a result.
As he closes in on the 454 day record set by the Honky Tony Man in the 1980’s – Gunther has taken some time to reflect on his reign.
The Title Doesn’t Make The Man
While speaking with Sam Roberts on the Not Sam Podcast, Gunther would be asked about his championship reign – having the following to say.
“It makes me very proud. It was the same with the NXT UK Title before. It was something where, okay, when I’m able to win a title, I’m going to make it the best run I possibly can make it.
The one thing I believe in is that the title doesn’t make the man, it’s the man that makes the title. I really believe in that. Obviously, it makes me very proud because, like I said, when I was a child I watched Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart, and whoever being the Intercontinental Champion.
That I can be on some sort of list of whatever they have going on with the longest reigns and something with those guys. That’s absolutely crazy, and I’m doing it my way. That’s the fact that makes me the most proud. I adapted, I learned, I evolved, but I never changed what I think was right for me to do. That’s the thing that makes me proud.”
Gunther Is Ready For The Main Event
It’s hard to deny that Gunther is one of the greatest Intercontinental Champions of all time, even if this is the only reign he ends up having with the belt.
His dominance as champion has been unmatched, and he’s brought a new level of relevancy to the belt – and has primed himself for a main event run in WWE as a result. When this reign ends, many feel it would be a waste to not put him in the mix for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
Perhaps the final hurdle between Gunther & making history comes tonight on Monday Night RAW, when he defends against Chad Gable. Can Gunther break the record? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
