WWE has something truly special in Gunther. This is a professional wrestler that would instantly fit into any era of the industry, and is possibly the most complete package in the company right now aside from part time names like Roman Reigns or Brock Lesnar.
He would recently make history, smashing the record of the longest single reign as WWE Intercontinental Champion – now at a staggering 460 days. However, he’s got eyes on bigger things in 2024 – including the Royal Rumble.
Gunther Sees Himself As A Favourite For The 2024 Royal Rumble Match
While answering questions ahead of WWE Superstar Spectacle, Gunther would be asked if he expects to be involved with WrestleMania 40. He’d have the following to say, saying he could well prove to be a favourite to win the 2024 Royal Rumble match.
“Yeah, I mean, that’s the natural progression from now on, I think. But we will see where it goes. I’m the Intercontinental Champion. I’m not planning on losing the title. We’ll see. Rumble’s in a few months. If I’m in there, I think I’m one of the favourites. That would lead to WrestleMania. We’ll have to see.”
Already A Proven Force In The Royal Rumble
Earlier this year, Gunther would play the role of the iron man in the Royal Rumble match. He would start the match alongside Sheamus, and would be the final man eliminated from the match by eventual winner Cody Rhodes.
This meant he spent an hour and four minutes in the match – proving his ability to survive longer than anyone else on the current roster.
Currently, it’s expected that Rhodes will challenge Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 to finally end his reign as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. However, WWE introduced the WWE World Heavyweight Championship earlier this year, and it’s currently held by Seth Rollins.
This gives another prize for the Royal Rumble winner to chase – and with two nights of WrestleMania planned once again, Gunther vs. Rollins would be a perfect closing match for the first night of the event.
