John Cena is a hard man to keep away from WWE. Whenever there is a break in his demanding Hollywood schedule, he will find his way back home to where he became a star. While he’s not in the ring tonight for Payback, he was offered the job of hosting the show.
John Cena Wants To Be A Good Host – And Get Involved With The Show
In his entire career – he’s done a lot. He’s opened shows, closed them, been a doctor and a Prototype – but never a host! Cena has been excited about this, but with his goal of making this the best show possible – he had an idea. He’s had his eyes on a match on the card, and would announce himself the special guest referee for The Miz vs. LA Knight.
The Miz hit the ring, and admitted that while Cena is the Greatest of All Time in many ways – but he’s a bad host. Cena asked The Miz for advice, and got the suggestion “Don’t insert himself into Miz’s matches”. However, while Cena doesn’t like The Miz – he respects him, Miz is a proven host.
Miz has hosted WrestleMania, and had two matches, Cena needs to be more involved, really take charge! He would double down on being the guest referee, revealing the shirt was already with him as the music of LA Knight hit – leading to a massive ovation.
Knight & Miz have been going back and forth for a while, and getting a win over a two time World Champion like The Miz is how Knight proves he’s not just a fad. With Cena as the referee, and his past with The Miz – he was anxious to get in the ring for the bell to ring.
Once it rang, Miz fled the ring – leaving Knight to stew in the ring. He’d rush in and start a brawl in the middle of the ring – trading right hands. Miz would lose control before a back elbow smash and underhook suplex from Knight. Setting Miz up on the top rope, Knight tried for a superplex – but was shoved down.
Miz would take a snap powerslam from Knight before some mounted punches. Knight lost control and almost got the Skull Crushing Finale – but countered and attempted the BFT. Miz fled to the floor, where he was bounced face first off the announce table. Knight would lose control again and meet the barricade face first.
The brawl would head into the timekeepers area, with Miz thrown back to ringside – and Knight jumping off the barricade with a lariat. Miz got into the ring first to get the high ground, kicking Knight into the corner before choking him with his boot. Cena pulled Miz off after a four count, allowing for a lariat form Knight.
Knight forced Miz into the corner, and Cena would pull him off – leading to a brief exchange of words. Miz would catch Knight with a blindside forearm, and hit a Codebreaker in the corner. Knight would be head to the apron, and Miz slipped between the legs and tripped him – Knight landing face first.
Back in the ring, Knight hit a spin out powerbomb, before a jumping neckbreaker and diving bulldog in the corner. Sliding dropkick would follow, before Miz tried for the Skull Crushing Finale again. Miz was unable to hit his finisher, but a set of DDT’s would follow.
Miz hit a jawbreaker, before getting in the face of Cena after a dirty pinfall was caught. Knight missed a punch and almost caught Cena, allowing Miz to hit the Skull Crushing Finale – but only a two count followed. Knight hit a snap powerslam before a jumping elbow drop, and finished Miz with BFT – for the biggest win of his WWE career.
Cena would offer Knight the handshake of respect on the stage, before raising his hand and giving him his endorsement.
Rey Mysterio Shuts Down Austin Theory
Austin Theory feels Rey Mysterio stole the WWE United States Championship off of him. He was prepared to face Santos Escobar, and decided to take him out of action before the match could begin.
Adam Pearce instead sent LWO member and WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio out – and Theory would lose his belt. Tonight, he has a chance to regain the belt – and defeat another WWE legend on a major stage.
With the LWO there to welcome Mysterio to the ring – Mysterio would be confident. Quickly using the speed that made him a lucha libre legend, Mysterio would try to get the pace he likes – only to be run down with a lariat. Slowing the pace down, Theory would use his power with two Fisherman Suplexes.
Mysterio would take some punches to the head, being set up on the top rope. The mask of Mysterio would be yanked at – but it stayed put.
Theory was sent to the floor with a headscissor takedown, before a sliding DDT spiked him on the floor. Back into the ring, Theory would take a 619 but blocked the splash. He would try for the A-Town Down, only for Mysterio to counter into the Victory Roll for the victory.
