Like everyone, The Overtimer Storylime has our favorite wrestlers, and one when we were growing up was the Ultimate Warrior.
His energy was contagious and often had us jumping around our house and cheering him to victory.
Unfortunately, like with anyone, wrestlers are human beings. They have flaws like the rest of us, and the Ultimate Warrior was no different.
His comments and actions were responsible for the negative feeling many of us have when we hear his name.
For others, his name brings up how he was an unsafe worker, didn’t grow in the industry, and so on.
Like most in the business during his time, he kept a lot hidden. While kayfabe was about protecting their characters and legitimacy of the business, others kept their good deeds to themselves.
The Overtimer Storytime: Kamala brought out the best in others
If there’s one wrestler who seemed to bring out the best in others, it was Kamala the Uganda Giant.
Most of us remember him as the terrifying Uganda Giant, but he was reportedly one of the kindest and gentlest people around.
He also had an issue in being paid what he was worth throughout his career. While in the WWE, he had a couple of top stars come to his defense.
After learning how little Kamala was being paid, Hulk Hogan reportedly went to Vince McMahon and told him Kamala needed to be paid more.
Another was the Ultimate Warrior.
It’s been reported that everyone knew Kamala wasn’t being paid fairly from the boys to management, but the Ultimate Warrior went a step further.
The Overtimer Storytime: Working behind the scenes
Kamala talked about the Ultimate Warriors actions in various interviews and his book before he passed away.
He talked about how when he and Warrior were on the road together, Warrior let him use his limo anytime her wanted instead of renting a car. No questions asked.
When they shared a hotel, Warrior paid for his room.
It’s something Kamala never forgot and he made sure to let people know about it.
What’s surprising for many in this is Warrior never took credit for any of this. He just did it to help a fellow wrestler out.
Given the negative press and attitude the Warrior helped create towards himself in his latter years, he could’ve used this to prop himself up.
But he didn’t.
There may be other stories out there like this we haven’t heard. For one of the business’ top guys at the time, avoiding the limelight and props isn’t something we’re used to seeing.
