YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul has a huge goal in mind for his boxing career. He wants to take on the biggest name in combat sports before a roaring home crowd, and the sooner the better. Paul, whose most dangerous boxing opponents so far include retired or semi-retired MMA fighters, wants to take on Conor McGregor in Ireland.
Paul is currently promoting a women’s boxing superfight between undefeated Irish champ Katie Taylor and America’s own Amanda Serrano. At a London press conference for the fight, Paul declared that his dream is to fight Conor McGregor.
Jake Paul Wants to Box Conor McGregor in Ireland
“I want to fight McGregor, I will fight him in a boxing ring in Ireland. This is partially how the journey [in boxing] started. I made up my mind that I was going to get a fight with McGregor and win it and that is what motivated me to jump into this boxing career.”
Whether Conor wants to fight Jake Paul, however, is another story. McGregor is currently recovering from the broken leg he sustained fighting Dustin Poirier in July, and likely won’t compete until mid-2022. When he does return, McGregor wants to pursue UFC gold once more, a claim he has repeatedly made in recent months.
Add to that that McGregor’s heaviest fight was at 170 pounds, while Jake Paul walks around at around two hundred pounds, and the odds of this fight ever occurring look slim.
Paul is also embroiled in an ongoing feud with UFC president Dana White, who isn’t particularly fond of letting his fighters out of their contracts to box Paul.
McGregor, in the meantime, remains focused on his business interests, including Proper 12 Irish whiskey and his newly acquired pub, The Black Forge Inn in Dublin. The Irish MMA superstar has made frequent appearances at the Black Forge of late.
He has stated that he wants to compete with another iconic Irish brand in the alcohol market with his own Black Forge stout, a direct competitor with Guinness.
Jake Paul has yet to announce his next boxing opponent, but several fighters have expressed interest. Anderson Silva remains open to the prospect, as does his previously scheduled opponent, Tommy Fury.
Fury was set to fight Paul in December, but an injury and resulting infection forced him out of the bout. Whether Fury will return to fight Paul, or if Jake Paul will continue boxing retired MMA personalities, remains to be seen.
