Capping off this three day weekend of major wrestling shows, it’s another WWE PPV Sunday tonight! I know! It feels like we’ve just been here! If you’re counting WWE Starrcade, and really you shouldn’t but in some ways you can, WWE have run a PPV-level show on three of the last four Sundays! That is somewhat overkill! But it comes to a close tonight, as it’s our last big event before the Royal Rumble kicks off WrestleMania season! And before that we have an interesting night of action awaiting us in the form of WWE TLC!
Looking at this card, I can’t help but think this is one of those shows that’ll either be completely spectacular or a total disaster. Just sorta have that feeling. And yannow what, that’s pretty exciting! So let’s get to the previews.
WWE Universal Champion Bray Wyatt vs. The Miz (Non-Title)
Soooo yeah, Bray Wyatt rather than the Fiend, wrestling as Universal Champion but not defending the Universal Championship, against the Miz. It um, sorta feels like they went out of their way to ensure that this match wouldn’t excite anybody or be remotely a draw of any kind. I can get not using the Fiend gimmick all the time and wanting to let the more regular Bray wrestle instead sometimes to preserve some mystique and make the matches that the Fiend does work more special, but what possible reason could there be to not put the title on the line here? Exhibition Champion vs. Champion stuff notwithstanding, when’s the last time a singles champion in WWE had a one-on-one match on PPV where their titles was not on the line? I suppose Survivor Series last month is supposed to have gotten us more comfortable with the idea.
In theory this being non-title means that the Miz can beat Bray without too much consequence, but even given that, and even given that it’s Bray rather than the Fiend, I just can’t wrap my head around the idea of the Miz as he is right now pinning Bray as he is right now. It’d just be silly. And given that the specter of Daniel Bryan is looming on this match in a big way, with them teasing to death that he’s going through some sort of twisted transformation, and many speculating that he’ll be making his return here, it seems even less likely that Miz could win this. So yeah, Bray over for sure.
