One of the biggest stories in professional wrestling in 2022 is the exit of Cody Rhodes from AEW. Following his loss of the TNT Championship in an instant classic with Sammy Guevara, Cody and his wife Brandi Rhodes would exit AEW.
This was a major shock, as Cody Rhodes was an EVP in the company – and one of the men who started this company up in the first place. Most thanked him for his time in the company, but Chris Jericho thinks this is a choice that Rhodes will regret.
Chris Jericho Feels Cody Rhodes Will Regret Leaving AEW In A Few Years
While speaking with Sports Illustrated, Chris Jericho would talk about Rhodes leaving AEW – and why you can’t linger beyond your time in professional wrestling sometimes.
“Is it surprising at first? Sure. But it’s wrestling, man. It happens all the time. The only reason why this was such a big one is because it’s the first AEW guy who left, and obviously Cody had a huge part in this company. But now there’s Bryan Danielson, CM Punk, Adam Cole, and Keith Lee with us. The more of those guys we bring in, the less spotlight is necessary to be shown on Cody Rhodes.
Maybe that’s one of the reasons why he left. I really don’t know. No one knows except for Tony Khan and Cody Rhodes. But he wasn’t happy in AEW, so he’s going to WWE, or be a stay-at-home dad, or do TV shows or whatever it is he’ll do. “I honestly think, in a few years, he’ll look back and think, ‘I had it pretty good in AEW. Maybe I should have stuck around.’ But you can’t think that way. Guys come and go all the time. That’s the business.”
Chris Jericho knows this well, having taken time away from WWE numerous times over his time with the company. His finally exit would see him join AEW, but he’s stayed on good terms with WWE all the same.
The Future Of Rhodes Remains Unclear
Right now, no one knows what is next for Cody Rhodes in professional wrestling. A WWE return seems likely, and could possibly even happen tonight at Madison Square Garden – as Brock Lesnar needs someone big to face with the WWE Championship on the line.
There have also been rumors of Rhodes becoming the one to run Ring of Honor, which AEW owner Tony Khan recently acquired. Rhodes has wanted to build a legacy similar to that of his father, and that includes being both a booker and wrestler.
His AEW exit was potentially due to Tony Khan taking over booking duties in the company – harming the ability for Rhodes to live out his dream. Allowing Rhodes to have some pull in Ring of Honor, which still has potential, could make for a smart move for Rhodes & Khan.
