Former World Bantamweight and World Super Bantamweight boxing champion, Guillermo Rigondeaux, has been left with just 20-percent vision following an explosion last week. The explosion came as a result of a cooking accident at his Miami home.
Former Boxing Champion Guillermo Rigondeaux Loses 80-Percent Vision in Cooking Explosion
According to his manager, Alex Bornote, a pressure cooker exploded in Rigondeaux’s face. Following the accident, Rigondeaux went in for tests and his camp hope to receive good news. Of course, the hope is that the Cuban boxer will be able to recover his vision soon.
Depending on how much damage was done—after all, he was left with just 20-percent vision—Rigondeaux could go through a lengthy recovery process. In explaining the accident to El Nuevo Herald, Bornote said:
“When the pot exploded and we saw how Rigondeaux was left, we thought the worst. Because his face and eyes looked very bad as a result of the impact of the explosion.”
At the moment, there is no further information on the injury or Rigondeaux’s tests. Guillermo Rigondeaux is an accomplished boxer with two Olympic gold medals under his belt from the 2000 and 2004 Games. Focused on the bantamweight class before transitioning to the pro ranks, he racked up more gold medals at the World Boxing Championships, the World Cup, and the Pan American Games.
After dominating the Cuban National bantamweight class from 2000 to 2006, he ran into a wall during the 2007 Pan American games. At that time, there was speculation that he would defect and turn pro. When Fidel Castro stated that Rigondeaux would no longer box for Cuba, he made his way to Miami and debuted in May 2009.
From May 2009 until July 2016, Guillermo Rigondeaux went on a 17-fight winning streak. In that time, he won the WBA Super Bantamweight title in a 6-rounder from Rico Ramos in January 2012. Rigondeaux would later take the WBO and The Ring Super Bantamweight titles after going 12 rounds with Nonito Donaire the following April.
The first career loss for “El Chacal” came after he attempted to move into the junior lightweight class and faced Vasiliy Lomachenko for his WBO Junior Lightweight title. Currently, his career sits at 20-3-1 with his last fight in February 2022 marking the third career loss for the 41-year-old former champion.
