Over the course of 38 years, WrestleMania has grown to become the one pro wrestling event of the year that can’t be missed. Every company has what they consider their “WrestleMania” but there’s only one.
The problem is who will take part?
It started out as a huge gamble by Vince McMahon as he put everything on the line and it came out a success, and each year since he’s sought to raise the bar.
In the process, there have been numerous wrestlers have been left off the Grandest Stage of Them All, and it’s a real concern for wrestlers that have busted their tails all year to get there.
True to life
Seth Rollins recently opened up on the Sports Illustrated Media podcast about how his WrestleMania storyline was closer to reality than any of us will ever know.
Special thanks to @ringsidetopic for the transcript.
“You do what I’ve been doing and you try to make it work. That’s what I’ve done the last few weeks, try to work my way into WrestleMania. People say, ‘this is ridiculous, this is preposterous, you’re Seth Freakin Rollins, how can you miss WrestleMania?’ If you only knew how close to the truth this storyline was, your mind would be blown. This is a very legitimate situation for me.”
Rollins sounds legitimate and as we mentioned there have been numerous superstars that didn’t get to appear at WrestleMania.
It really sounds odd that he could’ve been left out given it’s a two night event now and the WWE trimmed their roster so much, but you never know.
Needs to be more of what draws
It feels strange to say this given all wrestling companies need to put people that draw the fans in their shows, but the WWE seems more intent on the company being the product.
Many have stated this, including Jim Ross a couple of years ago. The WWE has always been at the whims of one person and every show and segment is written for Vince McMahon.
It’s about who he likes, not who the fans like. Just look at how he forced Roman Reigns on us as a face for years. It’s the perfect example.
Vince Russo recently pointed out hos he and Ed Ferrara would study the ratings to see what worked and who the fans wanted to see. Using that formula would avoid superstars like Rollins from missing out on the biggest night of the year.
What do you think? Was there a possibility that Rollins could’ve missed WrestleMania had the Cody deal fallen through? Let us know in the comments below.
